Naivas Shines in Retail Development: Third Batch of Graduate Trainees Step into Industry Roles

Naivas, supermarket chain in Kenya, recently celebrated the graduation of its inaugural group of trainees from its Graduate Trainee (GT) program, aimed at addressing the retail skills gap in the industry. This program, which began in 2023, is part of Naivas’ mission to enhance the shopping experience for Kenyans by recruiting and training top talent.

The GT program is an intensive 9-month training period designed to equip fresh graduates with essential skills across various retail business functions. This initiative aligns with the broader significance of the retail sector in Kenya, which contributes 9% to the country’s GDP. By developing new leaders in this field, Naivas aims to ensure the continued growth and innovation within the industry.

Retail careers have often been viewed as secondary options rather than primary career choices. However, Naivas’ innovative approaches, such as the introduction of the Foodmarket concept, have enhanced the attractiveness of careers in the supermarket sector. The company now offers diverse opportunities in areas like finance, marketing, supply chain, and IT, positioning itself as an employer of choice in Kenya.

Andreas von Paleske, Naivas Chief of Strategy, emphasized the company’s commitment to attracting and retaining top talent and developing clear career paths for its employees. The establishment of the Naivas Retail Academy, with the GT program as a key component, reflects this commitment. The graduation of the first 35 trainees marks a significant milestone for the program, with plans for future expansion and partnerships with more educational institutions.

David Kimani, a representative of Naivas, highlighted the importance of transforming the industry by nurturing the right people. He underscored that developing the next generation of leaders is crucial for the longevity and success of Naivas as a homegrown Kenyan brand. This initiative demonstrates Naivas’ dedication to sustaining its business beyond the tenure of its founders.
