Nyeri County Amplifies Fight Against Gender-Based Violence

By :James Nyaga
Kenya has witnessed a disturbing rise in femicide cases in recent years, with each life lost representing the suppression of dreams, potential, and vital contributions to society.
These women—our mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends—deserve safety and justice. Recognizing the urgency of combating gender-based violence (GBV) and addressing related socioeconomic challenges, the Department of Gender, Youth, Sports, and Social Services convened a two-day Gender Technical Working Group (TWG) and Stakeholders Sensitisation Workshop in Nyeri County.
The workshop aimed to equip stakeholders with critical knowledge and skills to tackle GBV, promote gender equality, and address emerging gender-related challenges.

Gender CECM Esther Ndung’u highlighted the workshop’s value in empowering GBV stakeholders to reflect on past achievements, assess ongoing challenges, and proactively address emerging issues.
She stressed the importance of collaboration, sharing best practices, and raising awareness to drive informed decision-making and effective community solutions.
“We’ve taken important steps toward developing strategies that address the critical issues surrounding GBV, HIV, and teenage pregnancies,” said CECM Ndung’u, expressing gratitude to stakeholders and partners like CREAW for their unwavering support and collaboration.
Among the pivotal sessions was an update on the Gender and Development Policy, led by Director of Gender Monica Thumbi, who provided a comprehensive overview of activities under the Nyeri County Gender and Development Policy.

Another significant session focused on the “Triple Threat” of GBV, HIV, and Teenage Pregnancies, which disproportionately impacts vulnerable populations, particularly adolescent girls and young women. Facilitated by Ms. Ann Nduta from the Health Department, this discussion highlighted the intersectionality of these issues and their far-reaching consequences.
Emerging gender issues and societal trends were addressed by Mr. Isaac Mungai from the State Department for Gender in Nyeri County.
His session emphasized the evolving dynamics of gender and development, underscoring the importance of adapting strategies to meet new challenges.
Magistrate Naomi Wanja also commended the stakeholders for their dedication and called for a multi-sectoral approach to addressing GBV. Similarly, Kamila Gacheri, CREAW Jasiri Program Coordinator, appreciated the commitment and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to achieve common goals.
