President Uhuru Kenyatta has fired Kenyatta National Hospital board chairman Nicholas Gumbo less than a year into his three-year term.
The Ex-Rarieda Member of parliament has subsequently been replaced by George Opondo who will serve for a period of three years effective 21st April, 2020.
Gumbo was appointed as the board chair of Kenya’s largest referral hospital in May, 2019 and was initially set to serve for a period of three years.
It is not clear why Gumbo was relieved of his duties by the President. However, Kenyatta Hospital’s management has been on the spotlight after the institution failed to explain the circumstances that led to the death of Prof. Ken Walibora who is said to have remained unattended at the institution for more than twelve hours.
Gumbo served for two terms as Member of Parliament for Rarieda constituency before vying for the Siaya gubernatorial seat in the last elections and lost to the current Governor Cornel Rasanga. He, however, challenged the outcome of the election claiming that his agents were not given an equal chance to verify the forms.
