Africa’s Agilitee: Leading the Charge in the Global Electric Vehicle Revolution
As the global community confronts the urgent threat of climate change, the United States has witnessed the steadfast commitment of companies such as Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, Nio, and Fisker, driving the momentum of the green movement and positioning the nation at the forefront of electric mobility.
Recently, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD surpassed Tesla in sales, securing the top spot for the world’s best-selling EVs, a position Tesla had held for over a decade. These shifts indicate significant developments within the electric vehicle industry.
Despite BYD’s surge in sales, Tesla remains the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer. Nevertheless, Tesla faces challenges in Europe, particularly with labor unions, leading to operational halts in certain European regions. These challenges are anticipated to impact Tesla’s sales until permanent solutions are implemented.
The ascendancy of BYD symbolizes the broader growth of the electric vehicle industry, demonstrating that electric vehicles are gaining ground in the automotive sector. Sustained progress in this industry depends on the continued affordability of electric vehicles.
The competition between the United States and China in the electric vehicle sector has also created opportunities for Africa to join the race. Agilitee, Africa’s first electric vehicle manufacturer, emerged in response to a market gap six years ago. Today, Agilitee leads Africa in the global electric vehicle race, representing hope for the continent. Conceptualized by Mandla Lamba in 2015 and commercialized in 2018, Agilitee has become a key player without any external funding.
According to global intelligence sources like Tracxn, Agilitee is ranked as the 207th largest Electric Vehicle Manufacturer globally, outperforming 1221 competitors. Remarkably, Agilitee achieved this status without any external funding, unlike many of its counterparts. The company is currently undergoing an IPO, postponed in 2023, with plans to trade shares on the stock market in 2024.
Agilitee’s journey was marked by significant challenges, including systemic obstacles, particularly in operating as a black-owned business in South Africa. Overcoming these hurdles, Agilitee has expanded its operations across six out of nine provinces in South Africa, with plans to cover the remaining three by March 2024.
With ambitions to roll out 50,000 vehicles on African roads in 2024, Agilitee is actively expanding into Indonesia, India, and the UAE, aiming for full operations in these regions by the end of the second quarter of 2024. Agilitee stands as a source of pride for Africa, exemplifying the continent’s potential for self-development by harnessing the talents and gifts of those dedicated to making a positive impact. The Agilitee story stands as an inspiring narrative in modern African history, offering hope for a cleaner and safer environment for future generations.
