AGRA and Rwanda’s ICT Ministry Launch Food Innovation Hub to Boost Agriculture and Food Security

The Ministry of Information, Communication Technology, and Innovation (MINICT) and AGRA have announced a strategic partnership to launch the Rwanda Food Innovation Hub, aimed at transforming food systems and empowering farmers across Africa.
The initiative seeks to enhance smallholder farming, create inclusive markets and financing opportunities, and strengthen agricultural resilience. By leveraging technology and innovation, the hub will boost food production, improve nutrition, and help communities adapt to climate change.
This collaboration aligns with Rwanda’s national development agenda, supporting economic growth and poverty reduction through digital transformation. It also supports AGRA’s 2022-2030 Strategic Framework, which focuses on achieving zero hunger, improved nutrition, and sustainable agricultural practices.
During the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Dr. Agnes Kalibata, President of AGRA, stated, “AGRA is committed to catalyzing sustainable food systems across Africa. This collaboration with MINICT will foster a vibrant ecosystem for food innovation in Rwanda, benefiting farmers and communities continent-wide.”
Paula Ingabire, Rwanda’s Minister of ICT, emphasized, “This partnership with AGRA is crucial for Rwanda’s ambition to become a Food Innovation Hub. Through technology and innovation, we can transform food systems, empower farmers, and enhance food security across Africa.”
The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration, positioning Rwanda as a leader in food innovation. It aims to accelerate and scale food system innovations to achieve key development goals.
Under the agreement:
- AGRA will provide strategic advisory services, participate in the initiative’s Steering Committee, and engage with stakeholders at national, regional, and global levels to foster partnerships.
- The Rwanda Ministry of ICT will spearhead policy design and implementation, coordinate with government agencies, and drive strategic partnerships.
As part of this initiative, knowledge and innovations developed through project activities will be widely disseminated. New technologies, products, and services will be made accessible and affordable, ensuring benefits reach those most in need across developing countries.
