Standard Chartered “Road to Anfield” attracts 42 teams

The battle for the trip to Anfield, home of Liverpool FC, has attracted 42 teams comprising six (6) media houses and 37 corporate organizations, drawn in eight groups.

Mediamax is pooled with Bamburi Cement, APHRC, KPMG, Craft Silicon, and Simba Colt in group A. Group B comprises of Royal Media Services, Diagio, Car & General, ICPAK, Sanlam, and Safaricom. Radio Africa Group, Computech, PwC, Beiersdorf, and Vivo Energy make up group C. Capital Group, Gertrudes Hospital, Sama Source, Britam, and Schneider are in group D.

The Standard Group and Nation Media Group are in groups E and F respectively. Other organizations forming these groups include MultiChoice, USIU, Jubilee Insurance, Davis and Shirtliff, Samer Africa, Nestle, Zamara, and JH Piego. EABL, Total, Unilever, AC Nielson and Galana Oil from group G. Deloitte, NAS, Tullow, MFI Solutions, and BAT compete in group H.  

The tournament will be held on 14th March 2020 at St Mary’s grounds for the five-a-side StanChart Trophy soccer tournament.

The winning team will gain direct qualification to the international round in Liverpool, to be played at Liverpool FC’s home ground Anfield, in May 2020.

Speaking during the official draw, Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Associate Principal in charge of sponsorships Dennis Sitieny said the tournament had grown into an annual event that participants look forward to.

“Last year, a total of 51 teams were hosted. The continued interest has been instrumental in improving the standards of the tournament,” he added.

The winners will travel to the UK for a fully paid 4-day trip to represent Kenya at the Standard Chartered Trophy Finals, which will be played at Anfield, the home of Liverpool FC in May. In addition, the winning team will attend an English Premier League match when Liverpool take on Chelsea at Anfield and will benefit from a professional training session with Liverpool FC legends and coaches to help prepare for the final tournament.

Last year, Letshego emerged winners of the Road to Anfield tournament after beating Capital FM 3-2 in post-match penalty shootouts having drawn one-all during the normal time.

In Kenya, the first 5 aside football tournament -The Road to Anfield- was launched in 2013 to celebrate the sponsorship of Liverpool Football Club and give a once in a lifetime experience to clients and media partners. Standard Chartered Bank has been the main sponsor of Liverpool FC since 2010 and extended its sponsorship of Liverpool FC for another four years taking the partnership through to May 2023.
