M-PESA Foundation’s KES 5 million investment to improve education and healthcare in Baringo County
The M-PESA Foundation, a philanthropic arm of Safaricom’s M-PESA, has invested KES 5 million in health and education projects in Baringo County. The Foundation has handed over a telemedicine facility worth KES 4 million at the Marigat Catholic Mission Health Centre, which is part of its Daktari Smart program. The telemedicine facility will allow healthcare workers at the facility to place electronic medical devices on patients, and specialists at Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital in Nairobi will be able to see the patients, interpret data, and provide specialist care in real-time. “We are glad to partner with the County Government of Baringo and Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation, to enhance access to health in the county. This facility adds to the one at Chemolingot Sub-County Hospital, which has already enabled more than 400 people to access highly specialized care since its launch in December 2021,” said Nicholas Ng’ang’a, Chairman, M-PESA Foundation. The Foundation’s Daktari Smart program was launched in 2021 and is being implemented in partnership with Gertrude’s Hospital Foundation. The three-year program aims to leverage telemedicine to provide specialist care to over 32,000 children in Baringo, Homa Bay, Lamu, and Samburu counties.
In addition, the M-PESA Foundation also handed over a newly constructed and furnished classroom worth KES 1.3 million to Marigat Special School. The project is part of the Foundation’s Wezesha Elimu Program, which aims to empower children with disabilities to access education through the provision of corrective surgeries and infrastructure support to schools.
The M-PESA Foundation’s investment in Baringo County will go a long way in improving access to quality healthcare and education in the region. The telemedicine facility will ensure that residents of Marigat have access to specialist healthcare services without having to travel long distances, while the classroom at Marigat Special School will provide a conducive learning environment for children with disabilities.
The M-PESA Foundation is committed to making a difference in the lives of Kenyans, and its investment in Baringo County is a testament to this commitment. The Foundation’s Wezesha Elimu Program and Daktari Smart program are helping to bridge the gap in access to education and healthcare in some of Kenya’s most underserved communities.
